Cycnogeton procerum, commonly known as Water Ribbons, is a lovely Australian native plant with a unique growth habit and easy care requirements. This cold-tolerant plant is native to Australia and is a member of the Juncaginaceae family.

As the name suggests, Water Ribbons have long, ribbon-like leaves that grow from the center of a rosette and can reach up to 2 meters in length. The leaves are light green in colour and get pinker towards the base, creating an attractive and colourful look in the aquarium. The leaves continue to grow as they reach the water surface, where they float along the top of the water. This is almost identical to how some of the aquatic Crinum species grow, making it a great, and much cheaper, native alternative.

This plant prefers a nutrient-rich substrate and will form tubers in optimal conditions. It is recommended to provide adequate lighting to promote healthy growth and tuber formation. CO2 supplementation is generally not required but will help to bring out pink leaf colouration in high-tech setups. Water Ribbons are also perfect for cold water ponds and tanks and it is able to withstand a wide range of water parameters, making it a versatile choice. In addition to its aesthetic appeal, Water Ribbons also provide a great natural hiding place for fish across the entire level of the aquarium with its long, flowing leaves.
