Syngonanthus anomalus, also known as Syngonanthus sp. 'Belem', is a unique plant in the Eriocaulon family that can be stem propagated. It has previously been called Syngonanthus macrocaulon, which is now considered a synonym of Syngonanthus anomalus. This demanding plant requires specific water conditions, such as soft water, high light, CO2, and iron. It is naturally found in the Amazon in very soft blackwater rivers. The plant has a distinctive mop or umbrella-shaped top, and multiple side shoots sprout as it grows taller. These side shoots can be cut off and replanted as individual plants.

To provide the optimal conditions for this plant, it is recommended to use soft water with a low pH and a very low carbonate hardness (soft water). CO2 injection is also essential for the plant's growth, and it benefits from regular fertilisation with a complete nutrient mix.

When the stems are planted at staggered heights, this plant can create nice bunches and looks best as a mid-ground bush. Its light green tone contrasts well with red or orange plants. While Syngonanthus anomalus is a finicky plant, we have found it can tolerate average/moderate light levels in water with an acidic pH of 4-6 and a KH of 0. However, higher light levels will speed up growth. It also benefits from supplemental iron, which will increase the vibrancy of the green leaves.

Syngonanthus anomalus is a fascinating plant to grow despite requiring specific conditions to thrive. Its unique appearance and growth pattern make it a great addition to soft water planted aquariums and high-tech aquascapes.
