Hydrocharis laevigata, commonly known as Amazon Frogbit, is a rosette floating plant that is native to Central and South America. Superficially resembling large duckweed, with its large leaves this plant is much easier to manage. This plant was previously called Limnobium laevigatum, and has been recently reassigned to the Hydrocharis genus.

Amazon Frogbit has an undemanding nature and fast growth. It is relatively easy to care for, making it suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarists. The plant features round and smooth leaves that look especially good in open tanks. Additionally, the long roots of Frogbit create a natural look in the aquarium, as well as providing a great place for fry and shrimp to hide in.

Amazon Frogbit offers more than just its aesthetic appeal. It is particularly beneficial in fish and shrimp breeding tanks as it efficiently removes excess nutrients from the water. This can help maintain optimal water quality and create a healthier environment for aquatic life.

In terms of growth habit, Amazon Frogbit is similar to other floating plants. It forms floating rosettes of spongy leaves that regularly produce runners, with young plants sprouting at their ends. With very little effort it will naturally propagate in the aquarium.

One of the advantages of Amazon Frogbit is its hardiness and cold tolerance. It can adapt well to a variety of water conditions and temperature ranges, making it a versatile choice for different setups. However, it's important to ensure that it doesn't completely cover the surface of the water, as this can limit light penetration to other plants or animals below. Remove excess plants regularly as required, and as with every plant - be sure to never release this species into your local waterways.

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced aquarist, Amazon Frogbit is a hardy and versatile choice that can thrive in a range of conditions.
