Schoenus apogon, is an uncommon native Australian hairgrass-like species that can be a great addition to aquariums and ponds. It has a much denser growth habit than other creeping grassy plants in the aquarium, tending to grow with a clumping form rather than spreading quickly via runners. This makes it much more manageable in a carefully laid out aquascape.

Schoenus apogon is a relatively demanding plant when grown submersed. Moderate to bright lighting is required, and supplemental CO2 is highly recommended. In these conditions it will grow long leaves that are a fair bit stiffer than that of a typical 'haigrass', making it a great option for adding a different texture to the aquarium. It is relatively undemanding when it comes to nutrients and can do well in a variety of substrates. This plant prefers soft water below 3°dKH, and does best in a slightly acidic to neutral pH.

When it comes to maintenance, trimming the plant regularly will help to keep its shape and prevent it from becoming too overgrown. This plant grows fairly long leaves underwater, and is best suited for the midground or background. Schoenus apogon will also benefit from occasional fertilisation and substrate supplementation with iron and other micronutrients. This plant can also be grown in shallow water or wet soil around the pond as a marginal, where it will grow much shorter. Grown out of water, this plant is easier to grow and will tolerate harder water in these situations as well.

If you're looking for a very uncommon, visually appealing native plant for your aquarium or pond, Schoenus apogon is definitely worth considering. Its unique growth habit and long, spiky green leaves make it an especially interesting option for high-tech aquascapes.
