Marsilea hirsuta, commonly known as Water Clover, is a fast growing and versatile aquatic plant that can be used as a foreground or carpeting plant in aquariums. It is actually a highly adapted fern and is native to Australia. In the aquarium, Marsilea hirsuta is a low-growing plant with a varying leaf form which changes depending on water conditions. Underwater fronds can have between one and four lobes, and its height is dependent on light. It grows short and dense under bright light. In shallow tanks and ponds, floating leaves can also develop, with a unique four-leaf-clover shape.

Water Clover is an easy-to-care-for plant that is suitable for beginners and experienced aquarists alike. It prefers moderate to high lighting and a nutrient-rich substrate, but can also do well in low-light conditions. It can tolerate temperatures below 10°C but grows best between 15-28°C, making it a versatile plant for many different types of aquariums.

One of the advantages of Water Clover is its ability to form a dense carpet, creating a natural and attractive habitat for fish and other aquatic creatures. It is a creeping plant that spreads across the substrate via runners. This plant also has a relatively fast growth rate, allowing it to quickly fill in the foreground of the aquarium. Its low-growing habit means it won't shade or crowd out other plants, making it an excellent choice for aquascaping.

In addition to its use in aquariums, Water Clover is also a popular plant for ponds and paludariums, where it can be used to create a natural-looking ground cover. It is a hardy and adaptable plant that can thrive in a range of conditions, making it a great addition to any aquatic or semi-aquatic environment.
