The classification of this plant, along with almost all other 'Echinodorus' grown in the aquarium hobby, has recently been revised - these plants now belong to the new 'Aquarius' genus.

Aquarius 'Red Flame', commonly known as Echinodorus Red Flame, is a colourful and easy to care for sword plant. It is a hybrid variety of Aquarius, developed through cross-breeding several different Aquarius 'Ozelet'-type cultivars. While this plant can grow in quite dim light, under high light the young leaves develop a bright speckled pattern. These leaves are a vibrant red colour, with some variegation and hints of green. The blotch pattern is stronger and denser than in the similar Aquarius 'Ozelot'. The leaves are also slightly wavy, giving the leaves a unique texture and shape.

The Red Flame Sword prefers medium to high light and nutrient-rich substrate to grow well. CO2 injection is not necessary but will improve the growth rate and colouration of the plant. It has a moderate growth rate and is a medium-size Aquarius in the aquarium, suitable for tanks from 30cm high. It is a very hardy plant that can tolerate a wide range of water parameters, making it an excellent choice for community tanks.

In terms of maintenance, the Red Flame Sword is relatively undemanding. It benefits from regular fertilisation, especially with iron-rich supplements, to enhance its colouration. It can also benefit from occasional trimming to maintain its shape and prevent it from overshadowing other plants in the aquarium.
