Sagittaria subulata, commonly known as the Awl-leaf Arrowhead or Dwarf Sag, is a low-maintenance grass-like aquatic plant that forms dense groups through its underground runners. While the term 'Dwarf Sag' may suggest a diminutive size, its growth pattern can prove otherwise. Although it's occasionally suggested as a foreground plant in aquariums, its height is variable and so requires regular trimming if you are after a low carpet look. With strong lighting and limited nutrients, it will remain shorter, but with dense populations and a good macronutrient supply, it can develop long leaves that grow to more than 30cm. Its submerged strap-shaped leaves get to about 5 mm in width.

Sagittaria subulata is remarkably easy to cultivate, making it a popular choice among aquarists, especially in North America where it is native to. This versatile plant is also cold-tolerant, adapting well to both tropical and cold-water tanks. It thrives in low to moderate light levels and tolerates hard, alkaline water conditions. This plant can also grow in brackish water conditions. Although it will flourish without CO2 supplementation, its growth significantly benefits from it. Under intense lighting, leaf tips can take on reddish hues.

Particularly appealing for low-tech tanks, it is a fantastic choice for aquarists at all levels of experience. Its undemanding nature, coupled with its capacity to thrive under diverse conditions, makes it an ideal choice for those new to aquarium keeping and seasoned enthusiasts alike.
