Samolus valerandi, the Water Pimpernel, is a hardy aquarium plant native to Australia and many other countries worldwide. In the aquarium, Samolus valerandi forms a compact, rosette that reaches up to approximately 15 cm in height. Its light green, oval leaves work well in the foreground of the aquarium, resembling those of a small Echinodorus. Occasionally, it goes by other names in the hobby, such as Samolus 'floribundus' and Samolus 'parviflorus'.

While Samolus valerandi grows relatively slowly underwater, it grows best when provided with strong lighting and a nutrient-rich substrate. This hardy plant is very tolerant to cooler temperatures, and is well-suited for aquariums with temperatures ranging from 4-35°C. Additionally, its adaptability extends to brackish water conditions, withstanding a salt concentration of up to 30 mg/l. Hence, it is capable of thriving even in very hard water setups, although it also grows well in softer water with a dKH of 7.

Due to its small size, Samolus valerandi can serve as an attractive accent plant in the foreground of aquascapes. Its elegant rosette structure makes it a wonderful focal point in aquariums, especially when contrasted alongside rocks or stem plants.
