Lilaeopsis polyantha, commonly known as Australian Lilaeopsis or the Creeping Crantzia, is a distinctive aquatic plant native to Australia. Unlike its exotic counterpart, Lilaeopsis brasiliensis, which has flat and spatulate leaves, this species has unique cylindrical, hollow leaves. The height of its leaves is strongly influenced by lighting conditions. Under intense light, the leaves reach approximately 10cm, while in lower light settings, it grows well as a background plant with extended leaves spanning up to 30cm in height.

This plant's growth pattern is characterised by its creeping nature, a trait shared with all Lilaeopsis species. Via rhizomes, it gradually spreads across the substrate. An impressively hardy plant, Lilaeopsis polyantha adapts well to a diverse range of water parameters and even has the ability to flourish in brackish water environments. Its resilience extends to enduring temperatures below freezing, making it a suitable choice for pond cultivation in regions susceptible to frost.

In an aquarium setting, Lilaeopsis polyantha truly shines when placed in an environment with gentle water flow. The long, soft green leaves elegantly sway in the current, adding a natural look to the aquatic landscape. In larger aquariums equipped with bright lighting, this plant is suitable as a foreground to midground carpeting option. Maintenance is akin to trimming hairgrass, offering aquarists the flexibility to shape it according to their preferences.
