Glossostigma elatinoides, commonly referred to as Small Mud-Mat or simply Glossostigma, is an attractive aquatic plant native to Australia and New Zealand. Known for its low-growing nature and vibrant green appearance, it is often used to create lush, carpet-like growth in aquariums.

Glossostigma is known for its small, teardrop-shaped, bright green leaves, which only grow 2-3cm high. It spreads via creeping runners with two leaves per node. This makes it a great choice for the foreground, creating a dense ground cover.

In terms of care requirements, Glossostigma elatinoides prefers a nutrient-rich substrate and benefits from the presence of carbon dioxide (CO2) supplementation, which promotes healthier growth. Moderate to high lighting is essential for this species, as it encourages the plant to grow along the substrate and not towards the water surface. For CO2 supplemented tanks, this is one of the fastest growing carpeting plants available. Otherwise, this is quite a tolerant plant, growing well in water with a carbonate hardness from 0-14°dKH, and temperatures of 4-30°C.

Glossostigma elatinoides is a versatile plant that can be used for various aquascaping styles, from biotope aquariums to Dutch-style aquascapes. It provides an appealing contrast to taller background plants and serves as a foreground focal point. When well-maintained, Glossostigma can create a stunning and visually striking foreground.
