Ludwigia inclinata var. verticillata 'Tornado', commonly known as Ludwigia 'Tornado', is a striking aquatic plant with very decorative leaves. This unique Ludwigia cultivar is known for its distinctive appearance, with tightly spiralling submersed leaves growing in a dense whorl.

Ludwigia 'Tornado' has care requirements very similar to Ludwigia inclinata var. verticillata 'Cuba', which it is a mutation of. Its leaves can grow bright orange-red under high light, or stay green in lower light aquariums. The plant features a bushy growth habit and can get large in good conditions, with its narrow leaves growing up to 8cm long. The combination of its colourful leaves and its tightly swirling, tornado-like pattern makes it a true standout in aquascapes.

Ludwigia inclinata var. verticillata 'Tornado' flourishes under moderate to high lighting conditions, which enhance the intensity of its colours. CO2 supplementation is highly recommended, as it can contribute to tighter spiralling and denser leaf growth. This plant grows well in temperatures ranging from 18 to 30°C. A carbonate hardness (KH) level of 0 to 8°dKH is generally suitable for this species. Maintaining a nutrient-rich substrate and providing regular water column fertilisation will help it thrive.

Ludwigia 'Tornado' is prized not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its versatility in aquascaping. It can be used as a focal point, a background plant, or as part of a colourful midground display. Regular pruning and maintenance are essential to keep its growth in check and maintain its striking appearance. With the right conditions and care, it can be a stunning addition to the aquascape.
