Eleocharis geniculata is a medium-large sized hairgrass species that is native to Australia. It grows larger than foreground carpeting Eleocharis species like E. pusilla and 'Belem', but much smaller than Eleocharis equisetina.

The leaves of Eleocharis geniculata are stiff and point straight up, with the submerged form being slightly thinner and more delicate than the emergent form. The leaves are fine and grass-like, contributing to an overall delicate and graceful appearance. In low-light conditions, the hairgrass may grow taller and more sparsely, while under high-intensity lighting, it tends to stay more compact and grows denser.

Unlike most other Eleocharis species, this plant generally propagates by clumping rather than by sending out runners and will form a neat stand in the aquarium. It prefers a nutrient-rich substrate and moderate to high light, and it benefits from regular fertilisation and CO2 injection. It will also grow best in temperatures between 18-28°C. Its vertical growth can create an interesting contrast with shorter, bushier plants or horizontal growing carpeting plants. It is also a good plant to use in breeding tanks or as a natural shelter for fish fry, as it provides vertical cover for fry to hide in.

Eleocharis geniculata is a good choice for biotope-inspired setups and ponds. This undemanding native species makes a great midground plant in larger aquariums or a background plant in smaller aquariums.
