Pontederia cyanea, previously called Monochoria cyanea, is a tropical, native Australian aquatic plant with a unique growth habit. In submerged conditions, it produces narrow, succulent leaves in a rosette.

If the water is deep enough Pontederia cyanea will remain a smaller plant with lime-green strap shaped leaves. In less deep water, oval floating leaves will be produced which look quite similar to those of Ottelia ovalifolia. In shallow tanks or ponds, the plant will breach the surface, and grow emergent heart-shaped leaves, which are eventually accompanied by small, attractive purple flowers.

This plant requires moderate to high light to grow and thrive in aquariums, but once established, it can grow quite quickly and provide an interesting focal point in the aquascape. For better growth of submersed leaves, CO2 injection is highly recommended. It can also be used in shallow ponds and water gardens, best placed in the water close to the edge of the pond.

Pontederia cyanea is an uncommon native plant that can add an interesting touch to biotope aquariums or native water garden with its unique foliage and pretty purple flowers. However, it does do best either underwater in deeper aquariums or growing out of the water in shallow ponds, so it may not be the most versatile choice for everybody.
