The classification of this plant, along with almost all other 'Echinodorus' grown in the aquarium hobby, has recently been revised - these plants now belong to the new 'Aquarius' genus.

Aquarius major, commonly known as Echinodorus major, the Ruffle Leaf Sword, or previously as Echinodorus martii, is a popular aquarium plant among hobbyists. This species is recognized by its vibrant, bright green leaves that are distinguishable by their ruffled, fluted edges. The leaves can grow up to 40cm in length and are more upright compared to other Aquarius cultivars.

The Ruffle Leaf Sword is a fast-growing plant that can reach up to 40 cm in height under optimal conditions. It is a hardy plant and can tolerate a wide range of water parameters, although it prefers moderate lighting and nutrient-rich substrates. It is best used as a centerpiece in the aquarium, or planted in the background to create a stunning green wall effect.

Propagation of the Ruffle Leaf Sword is done by separating the adventitious plants that grow on the flower stalks of the mother plant. These plantlets can be replanted directly in the substrate, and they will soon establish their own roots and begin to grow. Regular trimming of the plant is necessary to maintain its desired height and shape.
