The classification of this plant, along with almost all other 'Echinodorus' grown in the aquarium hobby, has recently been revised - these plants now belong to the new 'Aquarius' genus.

Aquarius x gabrielii, commonly known as Echinodorus Gabrielii, is a very rare, low growing sword plant with a complex lineage. First discovered as a species in 1990, it has more recently been determined to be a natural hybrid. In many ways it is similar to Aquarius × portoalegrensis 'Opacus' (another confusing hybrid with a complex lineage and many varieties, including plants like the Echinodorus Iguazu 2009).

It is an advanced-level aquarium plant and requires more careful attention to its lighting and nutrient requirements than some of the easier growing Aquarius. Flourishing under strong lighting conditions, this plant thrives when provided with a substantial nutrient supply, including substrate nutrients. Its low-growing nature sets it apart from other sword plants, with leaves that span only 5 to 8 cm in length. Notably succulent compared to other Aquarius species, these leaves may sometimes grow curling to one side or have a distinctive 'crispy' appearance. They grow outwards, spreading flat along the substrate. Mature plants measure approximately 15cm in width and 5cm in height.

Positioned best in a well-lit open space within the foreground of your aquarium, Aquarius x gabrielii's short stature can bring a sense of depth to your aquarium. The leaves have prominent veins, and under strong lighting, the newer leaves grow with a tan-orange colouration between the veins. This sword plant is a perfect choice for those who appreciate the challenge of growing a rare and slow growing species in the aquascape.
