Pogostemon stellatus is an incredible looking, native Australian species that makes a great addition to the planted aquarium. It is sometimes known as the Water Star, or by the incorrect name 'Pogostemon stellata'. Its fine needle-like leaves can give a spiky texture to any aquascape. This aquatic plant can grow quite wide with long leaves, making it perfect for backgrounds or midground areas in larger tanks.

When it comes to care, Pogostemon stellatus is moderately demanding. CO2 supplementation is highly recommended, along with regular dosing of macro and micronutrients. The plant prefers soft to medium-hard water and higher temperatures (approx. 24-28 °C), but can tolerate water from 15°C to over 32°C. As with most stem plants, it's important to trim the plant regularly to encourage bushy growth and maintain its shape.

Pogostemon stellatus can however adapt to a range of lighting conditions. In lower light, its leaves will be green and relatively small, while in high light conditions it will develop its characteristic colouration of purple, red or orange. The plant's colours vary depending on the amount of nutrients available in the water.

Pogostemon stellatus can also be easily propagated by taking stem cuttings and planting them in the substrate. This native plant can create quite an impact in the aquarium, with its densely arranged, colourful leaves, and grows well in most medium to high-tech tanks.
