Persicaria praetermissa, also known as Ruby Persicaria, is a striking native Australian aquatic plant that can grow above and below water. It is known for its long, thin, arrow-shaped leaves that are a glossy red to pink colour under high light, giving this plant its common name. The plant will grow with more of a green colouration in low to medium light conditions.

This plant is a fast grower and can thrive in a variety of aquatic environments. It enjoys additional CO2 and looks best with high light levels. Persicaria praetermissa is not too difficult to grow however, and still grows well in lower lighting where it will have green leaves. When provided with good water nutrients, it can grow quite bushy and produce a dense forest of leaves.

The plant is relatively easy to care for and can be a great addition to any aquarium, adding a pop of colour to the midground of your aquascape. This plant is easily propagated by cuttings and is an unusual stem plant due to its partly horizontal growth under high light. It is also very cold tolerant and can be grown in temperatures between 12-30°C, making it a great outdoor pond plant in cold climates as well.

While not a beginner plant, Persicaria praetermissa is one of the easiest red aquarium plants, making it a popular choice for many aquarists. Its long and thin arrow-shaped leaves and eye-catching colouration add a unique element to the aquascape.
