Isachne confusa is a very uncommon aquatic plant originating from Northern Australia. It is one of the few true grass species capable of thriving entirely submerged in aquarium environments. In the aquarium, Isachne confusa is a very spiky looking plant, with leaves that stick directly out from the sides of a rigid stem.

In very bright light and ideal conditions, the undersides of the leaves can become a deep purple, while the upper surface remains green. The alternate leaves are quite tough, and so have resistance against snail damage. This is quite a challenging species to keep successfully in the aquarium, with CO2 supplementation and pH control being essential.

Isachne confusa grows in soft, acidic water conditions, with a dKH of 0-2 and a pH of 4-6. High to medium levels of lighting are essential for its well-being. Isachne confusa also requires decent CO2 levels in the water, as well as water temperatures above 25°C to thrive.

Isachne confusa is a fairly small-growing stem plant and gets to roughly 10cm in height underwater. Rather than branching out from the stems once it reaches this height, this species will instead shoot up another stem from the base. After some time it can form a nice bush in the aquarium. Like all Isachne, in aquariums this species showcases slow underwater growth, making it well-suited for the midground. The leaves extend straight out to the sides, contributing to a distinctive spiky appearance. The stems grow directly upwards, creating an interesting contrast with the leaves when grown in a dense bush.

Propagation of Isachne confusa is achieved through stem cuttings. While it may require a bit more care and attention than other stem plants, this rare native plant makes a great addition to the high tech aquarium. It is a great plant for soft water tanks, accompanying plants such as Eriocaulon.
