Philonotis hastata, the Floating Feather-Moss, is a very uncommon, native, aquatic moss that grows on the water surface. This floating plant forms dense cushions composed of many thin, upright-growing green strands. These strands of moss are soft and water-repellent, allowing them to float rather than sink in the water.

Philonotis hastata can grow on water surfaces or attach itself to objects protruding from the water, such as driftwood. It is relatively easy to care for but does require a still water surface to grow well, so ensure filter outlets remain under the water for this moss. It tolerates low to high light levels and does not require additional CO2, making it a versatile and adaptable choice for both novice and experienced aquarists. For best growth, provide a moderate to high level of nutrients in the water column. Like most other floating plants, this moss will only survive floating on the water surface and cannot be submerged.

Propagation of Philonotis hastata is easy and can be accomplished by splitting the clump into pieces. The moss will also spread itself through small fragments, known as gemmae, that detach from the mother plant. These gemmae resemble green dust particles to the naked eye and float on the water, spreading further and forming new growth. At the base of the floating cushion of moss is a brown layer of rhizoids, which the moss uses to absorb nutrients from the water.

This native plant is best suited for biotope aquariums and aquariums that don't have a lot of surface water agitation. This delicate moss also grows well emersed on moist surfaces, making it a great choice for terrariums and paludariums, where it will grow along the water's edge.
