Heteranthera reniformis, the Kidney-leaf Mud-plantain, is a charming floating plant with attractive green leaves that float gracefully on the water's surface. These leaves typically grow up to 5 cm in diameter and look somewhat similar to Frogbit (Hydrocharis laevigata). The floating stems are accompanied by long, delicate white roots that dangle beneath, providing excellent shelter for small fish and invertebrates.

The alternate leaves of Heteranthera reniformis are shiny and water repellant, allowing them to sit on the water's surface. They have a heart or kidney shape, and are slightly spongy. The stems and petioles are also both buoyant. This species can easily be propagated by cuttings, best taken once the main stem has branched off. This is a tropical species and appreciates temperatures above 22°C. It can tolerate soft to very hard water and will even grow in brackish water.

Heteranthera reniformis thrives when allowed to float freely, where it can spread across the surface, forming a lush, green canopy. The long, trailing roots not only add a unique look to the aquarium, but also help to filter the water by absorbing excess nutrients, contributing to a healthier aquatic environment. Ensure excess plants are removed regularly with this fast growing species to prevent overcrowding. With its long roots, this plant is especially suitable for larger aquariums.

Easy to care for, Kidney-leaf Mud-plantain adapts well to a variety of water conditions, though it prefers moderate to high lighting to maintain a compact form. This makes it an excellent choice for aquariums and ponds alike, where it can flourish and enhance the overall aesthetic.
