Fissidens dietrichiae, commonly known as Dietrich's Pocket Moss, is one of the smaller species of aquatic Fissidens moss, ideal for nano aquariums and intricate aquascaping projects. It is native to Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia, where it grows along rocks in fast flowing cold-water streams. This attractive moss has compact, feathery leaf-like structures called phyllids, which grow in a neatly organised, overlapping pattern, creating a lush, miniature carpet effect in the aquarium.

The frond-like stems of Dietrich's Pocket Moss typically grow to under a centimeter in height, making it perfect for small-scale aquascapes. Its fine texture and deep green colour add a natural aesthetic to hardscapes in the tank. This intricate-looking moss is particularly suitable for creating detailed aquascapes in nano tanks and biotope aquariums.

Fissidens dietrichiae thrives in a variety of lighting conditions, from low to high light. While it grows well under low light, providing moderate to high lighting will promote denser and faster growth. CO2 supplementation, while not essential, can further enhance growth and health, ensuring the moss maintains its lush, green appearance. Like other Fissidens mosses, this moss does not grow out continously like Java Moss, and instead has more of a low-growing, carpeting habit.

This moss prefers soft to moderately hard water and can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, typically between 3°C and 28°C. Its adaptability makes it suitable for various aquarium setups, whether tropical or temperate. One of the key advantages of Fissidens dietrichiae is its ability to attach to hardscape elements such as rocks, driftwood, and other surfaces. This can be achieved using fine thread or aquarium-safe glue to secure the moss until it anchors itself with its rhizoids.
