Blyxa sp. 'Vallisneroides', the Ribbon-leaf Blyxa, is a rare aquatic plant that stands out due to its impressive height and uniquely long, ribbon-like leaves. Unlike most other Blyxa species, which are known for their compact and bushy growth, this particular species can reach up to 1 meter in leaf length, with its leaves gracefully draping across the water surface, creating a striking, natural look in the aquarium.

The elongated, ribbon-like leaves of Blyxa sp. 'Vallisneroides' bear a close resemblance to those of Vallisneria, a well-known aquatic plant often used in the background of planted tanks. However, unlike Vallisneria, this Blyxa species does not spread via runners. Instead, it reproduces by seeding underwater, with new plants emerging from these seeds within the aquarium. The leaves of this plant get up to 1cm wide, and spiral slighly on their way to the surface. The rosette can have up to 20 leaves on a mature plant.

Blyxa sp. 'Vallisneroides' does not form tight clumps like Blyxa aubertii, making it an ideal choice for those who want to create a natural, flowing background in their aquarium. Its towering leaves provide excellent cover for fish and other aquatic inhabitants, while also offering a beautiful, soft backdrop that enhances the overall aesthetic of the tank.

Ribbon-leaf Blyxa does not require very high lighting and will do well in moderately lit aquariums. This is a tropical species which prefers temperatures above 23° and appreciates a nutrient-rich substrate. CO2 supplementation is beneficial, helping to ensure the plant grows robustly and achieves its full potential in height. The plant can adapt to a range of water conditions, but slightly acidic to neutral pH and soft to moderately hard water are most favourable.

Blyxa sp. 'Vallisneroides' is a fantastic choice for aquascapers who wish to create a lush background in their tanks, with its tall, flowing leaves providing a dynamic contrast to other plants. This plant looks especially good in taller aquariums when provided with a good water current, where the leaves will wave around in the flow.
