Blyxa echinosperma, the Soft Blyxa, is an Australian native plant with long, bright-green leaves. This species was previously grouped in with Blyxa aubertii, but is now recognised as its own species. It grows well with ample lighting and makes an ideal centrepiece plant.

In terms of care, Blyxa echinosperma requires moderate to high lighting and a nutrient-rich substrate to thrive. In ideal conditions, this plant can grow fairly large, making it a great option for mid- to background areas in larger aquariums. Additionally, iron supplementation and CO2 injection can help promote faster and healthier growth, as well as enhance the plant's bright green colouration.

Compared to other Blyxa species like Blyxa aubertii, Blyxa echinosperma generally has thinner, softer and more delicate leaves, and does not form daughter plants as readily, until it reaches maturity. Under a microscope, the seeds of Blyxa echinosperma have a long projection from each end while Blyxa aubertii does not.

The leaves of Soft Blyxa will grow to around 30cm in height, but can also be trimmed down as required. Being quite flexible, this is a great plant for tanks with a gentle current, where the leaves can wave around with the flow.

Blyxa echinosperma is generally a low-maintenance plant, however regular pruning will help keep it smaller. It can also be propagated by separating its shoots and replanting them in the substrate.
