Blyxa aubertii 'Red' is a stunning and uncommon native aquatic plant that brings a vibrant splash of colour to the aquarium. With striking red to pink leaves under high light, this plant makes a captivating midground display in planted tanks. This species was previously mistakenly known as Blyxa novoguineensis, but has now been identified to be a variety of Blyxa aubertii

The long, narrow leaves of Red Blyxa grow in dense clusters, forming a bushy grass-like appearance. This plant can grow to around 30cm in height, but often remains smaller. It will also generally not grow taller than the height of the tank or drape across the water surface like Blyxa sp. 'Vallisneroides'.

Red Blyxa is relatively easy to care for, and can tolerate a range of water parameters. A slightly acidic to neutral pH and temperatures above 22°C are ideal for its growth. This plant will thrive in a nutrient-rich substrate and is particularly responsive to high lighting and CO2 supplementation, which help bring out its intense red colouration. In lower light conditions, this plant will grow with green leaves, so those aiming to maintain its vivid red appearance should provide strong illumination and an ample supply of nutrients. Nitrate limitation is especially effective in bringing out reds in this species.

Propagation of Red Blyxa is straightforward, occurring naturally through the development of side shoots. These offshoots can be carefully separated from the main plant and replanted to form new clusters, eventually creating a lush bush of red foliage.

Compared to Blyxa echinosperma, the leaves of Blyxa aubertii 'Red' are much stiffer. While they grow to a similar maximum height of 30cm, the firmer leaves of Blyxa aubertii splay more to the sides, and so will form a denser bush.

Red Blyxa is an excellent choice for aquascapers looking to add a pop of colour to their tank and pairs especially well with the green Blyxa echinosperma for contrast in the aquarium.
